HI,
Im new to this forum - so i do apologise if this has been asked.
For years i have really struggled with my weight - i went from doctor to doctor as my food intake was not etreme. i was finally told i had CD - however i feel as i am the only overweight person that has CD lol - All the things i have read have said that you lose weight with CD - can anyone else tell me if you can also be overweight with CD - because if this is not the case - i feel there may be something else that could be not allowing me to lose weight. i must amit though i have been gluten free for 2 weeks and have lost 3 kilos.
I think that im asking this question because a couple of people i know that have cd are all thin and always have been.

Thanks... confused

I have been diagnoised with CD but was also confused when I read that a symptom is weight loss. I have been struggling with my weight to but I have read in a few places of people losing weight once they start the gluten-free diet. I've only been on it for a few days (only very recently been diagnosed). So don't worry your not alone!

Hi Jodes, welcome to the forum Smile

I can sympathize, prior to being diagnosed my weight suddenly shot up, I literally ballooned. Once I got iron injections and started the GF diet it dropped and then went up again, but not as much.
I am still overweight, but that might be just me... genes and all.

Weight loss used to be one of the classic symptoms that Western Medicine trained doctors would recognize but it is slowly changing.

cheers
Savannah

Hi Jodes

As the others have said it does not seem uncommon. My daughter is overweight and was diagnosed while overweight. We were also puzzled as we originally thought, how could it be seeing as cd was a disease that was associated with malnutrition....I think like someone else said, the old way of thinking about it was that if someone was overweight then it wouldnt be cd but now they are realising this isnt the case

Good luck with the GF way of life

Hi Jodes, and everyone...just stumbled across this forum, now registered and excited to have access to chat to people, particularly as diagnosed CD for only a few months.

Jodes, when chatting to my dietitian, she explained that it would not be uncommon to be overweight (I carry extra weight too!) prior to diagnosis, due to the fact that because you may not be getting the nutrients required/absorbed the body can go into 'starvation mode' and 'hold on to everything'...like you hear about when people yo yo diet. So even though malnourishment is an issue for untreated CD, it may not always mean skinny!

I have dropped 8kg or so since diagnosis and gluten free the only thing i change... i think my body loves me for the change!

I have been gluten free now for about 8 months, but prior to being diagnosed I had been trying to lose weight. I have struggled with my weight for a very long time, losing weight and then putting it all back on and more. So the whole weight loss thing as a result of coeliac disease didn't happen for me.
What I can say is that having been successful last year with weight loss before I found out I had coeliac, my doctor told me I might put on weight going on to gluten free. I have continued to lose weight but I think the big thing is I really try to pay attention to kj's as well as if something is gluten free. I wonder if lots of people find out they are gluten free and then forget about how much fat or kj's is in what they are eating. Unfortunately alot of gluten free products seem to be high in everything! There is also definitely the whole mentality of feeling deprived so then you go and eat stuff that's not great for you.
For me I know that I feel a lot better because I have lost weight but it has been very hard to get to this point.

Hi newb, welcome to the forum

yes, I think you hit the nail on the head... the feeling deprived mentality Very Happy
we feel we are 'missing out' so now we overcompensate.
Going GF is really a wonderful opportunity to go 'back to basics' , cut out all the junk and save a lot of $$$ in the process.

cheers
Savannah

haha, I am one of those... I eat lots of plain chocolate, or twirls or flakes because I can Smile I always thought at least I can still eat chocolate, but started to eat way too much of it.

I have gained a bit of weight since going GF I am not overweight but starting to worry, my size 10 clothes which were all quite big for me are now too tight and I have gone up to a 12. So I will start been more careful because I can imagine it would be quite easy to keep gaining.

I'm glad I found this thread.

I was a little overweight before diag with CD but I felt bloated and energyless all the time.
I then went gluten and dairy free and lost about 8kg, no bloating and HEAPS of energy.
I eat ALL the time now - like non stop grazing and main meals.
I struggle to maintain my weight and am trying to put more back on.

Clearly my body prefers the dairy and gluten free diet.

Hopefully you will find if you stick with a true gluten free diet you will (or should!!) lose weight. You can eat a ot of fresh fruits, vegetables, salads and keep away from the fast foods like Macdonalds, pizza etc. Any weight loss should be combined with exercise and moderate eating so try and introduce these into your life and keep up with the diet and I am sure you will succeed. I am the lightest I have been now for about 10 years and it is all due to going to the gym (not often but I try and go at least once a week), moderate walking and eating in moderation - small meals and just having a treat now and then. Very Happy Very Happy
